Attitudes on Civil Unions Changing In Colorado

A recent survey by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic survey company, suggests a majority of Coloradans – 62% - favor passage of a state civil unions bill. The bill is scheduled for a hearing this Thursday in the same house committee where it failed last year by one vote.

Dustin Ingalls is assistant director of Public Policy Polling. He says public opinion regarding civil unions is changing not just in Colorado, but around the country.

“We’re finding, in almost everywhere except for maybe the deep south, rising support for at least legal rights for same sex couples if not for same sex marriage itself.”

Ingalls says the changing opinions may be due in part to a more tolerant younger population coming of age. The company, based in North Carolina, surveyed 542 Colorado voters by phone from around the state in early April.
