Although former tech executive Andrew Yang dropped out of the presidential race in February, the ideas that captured his supporters’ imaginations seem more relevant now than ever.
In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Trump administration said it planned to work with Congress to pass an aid bill that would see checks worth thousands of dollars mailed to Americans.
This idea mirrors Yang’s signature proposal: the Freedom Dividend, through which the government would send $1,000 a month to every American.
Yang told usin May that a universal basic income (UBI) might help address everything from climate change to job loss due to automation.
The aid package has added one more thing to Yang’s already long to-do list.
He’s been contributing to CNN’s political coverage, and his team has also reportedly been in touch with the Trump administration, offering guidance on the ins and outs of UBI.
