By a 57-40 vote, the Senate just failed to get the required 60 votes to move ahead with consideration of legislation to repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that bars openly gay men and women from serving in the military.
OnMorning Edition today, Barbara Bradley Hagerty reported about the concern some military chaplains have regarding their careers if the don't ask policy eventually is repealed.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen favor doing away with don't ask, as does President Obama. Some top Pentagon brass, though, don't want to take that action at this time.
