When I found out that I would co-host another electronic edition of All Songs Considered, I e-mailed the managers of my favorite acts and asked if they had any plans to release new music in the next month or so.
One of my favorite young acts right now is Factory Floor — the unsigned London trio of Gabe Gumsey, Nik Colk and Dom Butler — which layers ominous electronics, drums and guitars onto unsettling yet cathartic post-punk. (The band's Untitled EP was one of my favorite albums of 2010.) The group's manager got back to me and, just my luck, Factory Floor indeed had new music arriving in March. In fact, he was expecting the mastered audio to arrive that week. I asked him if we could consider a track for the All Songs Consideredpodcast, and he sent me a YouSendIt link to an untitled WAV file.
I downloaded the song, which turned out to be the B-side remix from Factory Floor's upcoming 7", which was produced by Joy Division and New Order drummer Stephen Morris. It was a massive rework by arguably the best remixers in the world: the Glaswegian duo Optimo. I was blown away by the song's mantric underpinnings and dissonant swells. I wrote back that we'd love to feature this on the podcast, but that I didn't know the song's name.
A few minutes later, I heard back from the manager: "They are still arguing over the title, you can call it 'Real Love' for now."
That's right: The song was so fresh, it didn't even have a name.
So, we went with "Real Love" — but don't be surprised if this song has a different name when it's finally released next month.
