Following Greeley Quake, Scientists Install Network To Look For More

Following the May 31, 2014 quake near Greeley, scientists from CU-Boulder are placing seismometers like this in Weld County to look for more earth movement.

After a rare magnitude 3.4 earthquake northeast of Greeley, scientists hope to learn more about any possible future quakes in the area. They’ve quickly mobilized to set up a network of five instruments that monitor for earthquakes, all around the epicenter of the original one.

After a 3.4 magnitude earthquake hit Saturday evening near the northeastern Colorado town of Greeley, questions about its connection to oil and gas development started popping up on social media and in the blogosphere, with anti-fracking activists trying to make a link between the two.

Pakistanis who endured Tuesday's strong earthquake that killed hundreds of people felt another quake Saturday, as a 6.8-magnitude quake hit Pakistan's remote province of Baluchistan. The quake may also have been deadly, due to reports of collapsed mud houses.

Saturday's aftershock quake struck less than 20 miles from Tuesday's 7.7-magnitude event. And it came after survivors had already grown frustrated with the pace of relief efforts — an undertaking complicated by unrest in the area.

Dozens Killed By Strong Quake In Southwestern Pakistan

A strong, 7.7-magnitude earthquake in southern Pakistan on Tuesday has killed at least 45 people, according to Reuters. The U.S. Geological Survey says the initial temblor was followed by several aftershocks — one of them a 5.9-magnitude.

The affected area is reportedly about 145 miles southeast of Dalbandin in Pakistan's western province of Baluchistan.
