Officials say crashes involving about 70 vehicles have bottlenecked a section of a snowy Colorado highway and sent eight people to the hospital. The Colorado State Patrol says the massive pileup Tuesday prompted officials to close the eastbound side of Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County.

Due to the potential for harsh winter conditions in Colorado, commercial vehicles are required by law to carry chains from Sept. 1 through May 31 on I-70 and other mountain roads.
