Congratulations Spring Graduates

This weekend is commencement for spring graduates at both Colorado State University and the University of Colorado. The University of Northern Colorado graduated their spring class last weekend. Congratulations to all of the graduates!

This is a celebratory weekend for all graduates and their families. I wish you nothing but the best of luck for you in your future endeavors. While I haven't been asked to give any commencement speeches this year, or ever for that matter, I can offer some nuggets of advice.

I'll start with the most obvious and in some ways the truest. Mary Schmich's 1997 Chicago Tribune column, made most famous later by Baz Luhrmann. Wear sunscreen.

You're getting a lot of advice this weekend, tomorrow, and probably for the next week or two. I'll be brief:

  • If you haven't yet, thank a teacher. They make a difference.
  • "If you accept your misfortune and handle it right, your perceived failure can become a catalyst for profound re-invention." - Conan O'Brien
  • "...As you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." - Steve Jobs

Seriously though. As a bald man, this I believe: wear sunscreen.
