Society of Professional Journalists Recognizes KUNC News Department

The KUNC newsroom was recognized with 8 awards in the 2013 SPJ Top of the Rockies journalism competition.

First place awards were given for Website Excellence and Best Multimedia story. Reporter Grace Hood won first and secondplace awards in the Enterprise Reporting category for her ongoing coverage of the issues surrounding on-line education in the state. Reporter Nathan Heffel received a first place award in the Feature Reporting category for his coverage of an innovative music program at a Denver elementary school.

Heffel and Hood were also both recognized in the News Reporting Category with firstand secondplace awards for stories relating to last summer’s High Park wildfire.

The Top of the Rockies is sponsored by the Colorado chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a volunteer board. The contest had more than 700 entries this year from the four states that make up SPJ's Region 9: Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico and Colorado. Entries were judged by journalists in Oklahoma.

The KUNC news department has also been recognized this year with three awards from the Colorado Broadcasters Association and five regional Edward R. Murrow awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association.
