The price of gasoline varies across the Mountain West—some states paying more than the national average

Motorists across the Centennial State are taking advantage of the unusually low prices as the holiday season revs up.

AAA says more Americans and Coloradans are expected to travel for the 4th of July holiday, with people traveling further and taking a longer vacation.

Gas prices have risen over the past month nationwide, though averages remain significantly lower than a year ago.

Mountain West states are some of the most expensive places to own a car, according to several data sets analyzed by Forbes Advisor. Nevada tied with California as the most expensive states, while Colorado ranked third.

Gas prices are on the decline nationwide and many states are boasting lower prices than a year ago. But for some in the Mountain West, that’s not the case.

The American Automobile Association reports that the national average price has dipped 9 cents over the last week to $3.79 a gallon. Even though demand is up slightly, it is lower than it was this time last year.

Federal reports show Memorial Day gas prices are the highest they’ve been in a decade, adjusting for inflation. Still, AAA has found that half of people won’t cancel summer vacations no matter what gas prices do. But about three quarters said they would make some general changes once gas prices hit $5 a gallon.

Gas prices have been on the rise nationwide, the result of several factors, including the effects of the pandemic, supply chain issues and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
