A 'school food Renaissance' at Greeley-Evans District 6 has caught the attention of federal nutrition officials. A representative with the U.S. Department of Agriculture will meet with school officials Tuesday and tour a kitchen that prepares student meals from scratch using fresh, local ingredients.
This is the second high-profile visit to the district in recent weeks. The assistant secretary of the Department of Education toured the new Health Science Academy at Greeley Central High.
"As we left that meeting the individual was talking about how we are a national model; a national program for different opportunities,'' says Scott Holcomb, who oversees the district’s Career Pathways program.
The program, now in its second year, gives high school students the opportunity to gain college credit and hands-on experience in various career fields, including health science, accounting, criminal justice and engineering.
This week’s USDA visit is part of 'The School Day Just Got Healthier' campaign to promote new national school menu rules. Besides touring the Central Production Kitchen, officials will also visit a neighborhood school garden that supplies produce through a garden-to-cafeteria program.
