Although winter still seems a long way off in Colorado, the top portion of the highway up Mount Evans is closing for the season at 7:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Colorado Highway 5 is billed as the highest paved road in North America. It provides access to the top of Mount Evans, with its peak at 14,264 feet.
Each year after Labor Day, the state Department of Transportation closes a five-mile section of the road from Summit Lake to the peak to meet an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service.
The upper portion typically reopens in late spring. The 10-mile portion between Echo Lake and Summit Lake will remain open until early October, depending on weather and driving conditions.
